CO2 Supply

For connection of CO2 distribution tubes, I had a difficulty in connection of tube and parts. CO2 regulator is easy to connect the tube, but it is difficult to connect the tube to glass product because the glass pipe is thicker than the tube. Especially pressure-resistance tube is very hard to connect. I use genuine ADA tube for CO2 distribution.
Please use Silicon Tube (in CO2 Advance System or Parts Set), when connecting with ADA glass item. Other tubes may damage the glass items. (Pressure-resistance Tube cannot be used for connection with glass items.) For easy connection, please soak the glass pipe parts in the water. Pressure-resistance tube is used for connection between CO2 Regulator (Ball Valve) and Non-return valve, while silicon tube is used from non-return valve to CO2 Pollen Glass. Non-return valve is included in CO2 Bubble Counter and CO2 Beetle Counter, and Parts set. Please insert Pressure resistance tube to IN side of non-return valve, and Silicon tube to OUT side.

Now I am supplying CO2 with CO2 advanced system. When supplying the air during the night, is it possible to supply air, using same Pollen Glass in combination with distribution parts?
Pollen Glass (CO2) diffusing mesh is very fine, and it does not let air through the mesh with conventional air pump for ornamental fish keeping. For making aeration during the night, we recommend to use Pollen Glass (Air). The Pollen Glass (Air) has a coarse mesh, and it provides enough aeration with commercially available air pump. Even though it is not automatic, you can lift Lily Pipe Outflow, and make a aeration effectively. After turning off the light, by reducing the water level, or lifting up the Lily Pipe Outflow and fixing it so that Outflow mouth have half way up from the water line, outflow water sucking in the air, it can have aeration effect.

When I use Joint Glass JG-007 on 60cm aquarium tank, the position of Pollen Glass seems to be very close to the water surface. Doesn’t it affect CO2 supply or aerartion?
We consider the basic Pollen Glass setting position half the distance from the bottom to the top. In case of 60cm tank, we advise to set the center of suction cup at 10cm from the aquarium top, considering the substrate thickness. When using Joint Glass JG-007, we also advise to set above written position. Some customer place Pollen Glass near the substrate, but when we compared the CO2 density, we did not find much difference with Pollen Glass position. So we recommend to set the Pollen Glass at above mentioned place. One end of Joint Glass JG-007 is designed to be connected to Pollen Glass, and the other end to Glass Counter Side. The one end with shorter U-shape should be connected to Pollen Glass.

 

Substrate

I am now using Multi Bottom, but it seems algae appears more frequently after the use. My tank is 60cm and aquatic plants are planted on 1/4 of all the substrate area. Do you think using two Multi Bottom too much?
Multi Bottom is a solid form nutrient and can be inserted directly into the substrate. If aquatic plants are planted on 1/4 of the total substrate area, two Multi Bottom is appropriate. When inserting into the substrate, please make sure to put deep inside as much as you can. If you do not insert deep enough, a part of nutrients may dilute into the water, and it may darken the water, or become a cause of algae appearance. If you inserted deep enough, it should not be a problem. If you have many algae, we advise to make frequent water change.

Filtration

I am using BIO RIO as filter media, and would like to ask how long I can use it. I cleaned it up recently and realized it turned brownish very much. The main material of BIO RIO is porous natural rock, therefore basically, there is no functional life. However, acid residual material is accumulated little by little on the Bio Rio when the filtration bacteria dissolves organic substance, therefore, it is a time to change if pH gets down soon just after water changing. Also, BIO RIO is a biological filtration material, which works with bacteria or protozoa on the surface. It takes a time to establish filter microorganisms on the surface of filter media, therefore we do not recommend to change BIO RIO in short term. To maintain filter media regularly or to wash sludge are helped to use for a long term. Just rinse attached sludge on the surface of media lightly in bucket with aquarium water. Please do not wash strongly even if the surface turns brownish. The filter media, with biological filtration bacteria is important. Therefore please use the filter media for a long time with proper maintenance.

Is it possible to reuse once-used activated carbon? How could we know the timing of carbon replacement?
Activated Carbon, such as NA Carbon purifies water by absorbing various substances on the surface. After using a certain period, it loses absorption capacity. Then please replace with new one. In case of absorbing hard-to-dissolve chemicals, activated carbon may release the absorbed chemicals again into the water. So we recommend early replacement of the activated carbon.
However, there is an exception. It is the case that activated carbon is used a part of filter media from initial stage in the planted aquarium tank. In the planted tank, mostly organic matter, ammonia and nitrous acid are absorbed, but those substances are dissolved by filtration microorganisms. Therefore, it is not problem to keep using the activated carbon as biological filter in this case. Because the surface of activated carbon has large scale surface area with abundant surface contours and it is suitable to colonize for filtration microorganisms. The life of attachment ability of activated carbon is about two weeks, but filtration microorganisms propagate on the surface and filter media changes from as chemical filtration to as biological filtration when losing its attachment ability. In case you keep aquarium tank for a while and the algae grows much suddenly, please clean up BIO RIO and change to new activated carbon so that it can help the temporary weakened ability of filtration microorganisms.

 

Water Condition

I still do not understand how to use Drop Checker. Does Drop Checker need maintenance or changing the reagent?
Drop Checker is CO2 density measuring unit, utilizing character of changing pH value according to CO2 amount in the water, and used for knowing CO2 supply reference. When the amount of CO2 in water changes, liquid (pH reagent plus aquarium water) in Drop Checker changes its color accordingly. Usually, the liquid shows blue color before supplying CO2 or shortage of CO2, and shows green color when CO2 is proper amount in water. Also, the liquid shows yellow color when CO2 is in abundance.
Although the liquid in Drop Checker does not make contact with aquarium water directly, as CO2 level changes in aquarium, CO2 level of air inside the Drop Checker changes accordingly and it turns the reagent color. From this reason, water condition of the aquarium water and reagent must be same condition in order to have correct result. So we advise to change the liquid inside the Drop Checker, right after the water change, when the water condition changes significantly. For maintenance, please use Superge, for cleaning the algae. After soaking, please rinse out completely in order to get correct measured result. Please rinse inside the Drop Checker by syringe, as well. Please rinse the Drop Checker’s inner surface by using a syringe.

My aquarium tank condition is in a disaster. Even one species got spoiled. Maybe amount of bacteria is less, or not existing. Or do you think it has another reason?
At beginning of aquarium setup, algae tend to appear, and even after a few months, if the water condition is not so good, then we recommend filter maintenance. When you open up the filter, and find the dirt among the filtration material, please rinse the material in a bucket with aquarium water. Most filtration bacteria require oxygen, so we advise to make aeration during the night when the light is turned off. In case number of bacteria is decreased, we also advise to supply Bacter 100. As the Bacter 100 powder does not dissolve in the water completely, it is advisable to dissolve in a small plastic case, and supply the top clear layer to the aquarium tank. Above mentioned aeration at the same time is further effective.

I have a planted aquarium layout with “Seiryu Stone”, but the stone seems to raise the water hardness. Now I use Softenizer to keep the hardness low. This hardness rise will stop after certain period?
Seiryu Stone have been used in many aquariums in our Nature Aquarium Gallery here in Niigata, but the one with white powder on the surface tends to raise the water hardness, and the one kept in the water for a long period of time with algae on its surface does not raise the hardness much. If you use new Seiryu Stone and experience the hardness rise at beginning, we recommend to use Softnizer until the hardness rise stabilizes. When using Aqua Soil Amazonia for the substrate, it does not affect the plant growth much. If the stones are used for the aquarium layout, it is advisable to check the Total Hardness with Pack Checker.

 

Aquarium Layout Creation

I sometimes see on AQUA JOURNAL, Glossostigma elatinoides is growing with Riccia. How do you make such a planting?
This situation may happen by accidents, but we sometimes to let Riccia grow among Glossostigma intentionally. First we prepare small stones (like Moss Ball) and tie Riccia fluitans with Riccia Line. As the size of the stone is small, be careful not to squeeze Riccia with fingers. Prepare those Riccia tied small stones and set those stones randomly on the substrate, and plant Glossostigma around the stones. As Glossostigma grows, small stones will be covered by Glossostigma, and then Riccia will appear from the space between Glossostigma.

 

Aquatic Plants Growth

How can I plant Hemianthus callitrichoides Cuba? Please tell me how to grow Hemianthus callitrichoides.
Hemianthus callitrichoides is very difficult to plant as it has short roots, and tends to flow easily. In case of planting the plants in a pot, it is easier to plant without removing Rock wool completely. Leave some wool around the roots, and grab this part with tweezers, and plant. In case of planting Hemianthus without rock wool, you must bury the stem parts in the substrate. Hemianthus callirtichoides grows well in Aqua Soil Amazonia, but it does not grow well under high water hardness. So for the layout material, we recommend Seiryu Stone. We also recommend frequent water change right after the planting. (Please use Brighty K for removing chlorine residue.)

This is the first experience for me to have winter season after setting up my tank. But aquatic plants do not grow well recently. As I placed aquarium tank in the front entrance, the room temperature is very low. (approx. 10°C) and water temperature is 26°C. Low substrate temperature affects the plant growth?
It depends on the aquatic plant type, but plants like Cryptocoryne sp. or Echinodorus sp. which spread the roots firmly in the substrate, have a difficulty in its growth when the substrate temperature is low. The plant leaf may be soiled when there is a big difference between water temperature and substrate temperature. In such a case, when the temperature goes up in Spring season, the substrate temperature also goes up, and the aquatic plant growth will suddenly restarts. Even in the winter season, you can use “Growth Plate” and a heater to warm up the substrate, and keep the substrate temperature. If the room temperature is below 10°C, or lower, we recommend to use “Growth Plate” when you set up the new aquarium.
